The vagaries of fashion.

In 1860
it was quite acceptable in England
for men and women to bathe together naked,

but by 1880 it was unacceptable
for the leg even of an elegantly-carved table to be seen,
much less a woman's nether limb.
Today Englishwomen parade more than half-naked
and want only to be slim.
