Five lines in memory of al-Ma'arri (Abu 'L-ala Ahmad ben Abdallah al-Ma'arri, 973-1057)
Prophets have come and gone, humanity to teach,
And priests and imams from their pulpits preach.
They pray, exhort and pass away;
their congregations listen, mumble, slay.
And I am a buried pebble on the beach.
