Being a bit backward,

it never occurred to me
that the traditional presentation of a time-piece
to a retiree was symbolic of the new reality
that he now was in control of his own time.

This was very often too terrible, too heavy to bear :
many men died within 5 years of retirement.

It is your 65th birthday.
Your boss gives you a nice gold watch.
You are thrilled.
You are touched.
You are fired.
You ask him why.
He says the company could use some new blood.
You say you could use some new blood yourself.
Somehow, the joke doesn't work.
Somehow, neither does the watch.
